Newcastle and Luton played out a thrilling 4-4 draw at St James' Park in a game that had everything. The hosts took the lead twice in the first half through Sean Longstaff, who scored a brace with a header and a low shot, but Luton responded each time with goals from Gabriel Osho, who nodded in a corner, and Ross Barkley, who curled in a stunning free-kick. The visitors then stunned the home crowd by scoring two quick goals after the break, with Carlton Morris converting a penalty after being fouled by Jamaal Lascelles, and Elijah Adebayo tapping in a cross from Harry Cornick. Newcastle looked down and out, but they showed their fighting spirit and pulled one back through Kieran Trippier, who volleyed in a brilliant cross from Bruno Guimaraes. 

They then completed the comeback when Harvey Barnes, making his return from injury, found the bottom corner with a precise finish. The final minutes were frantic, with both sides having chances to win it, but neither could find the decisive goal. The result leaves Newcastle in seventh place, four points behind sixth-placed Everton, while Luton move up to 16th, six points above the relegation zone. It was a memorable match for the neutral, but a frustrating one for both managers, who will have plenty to work on defensively. 

"When you score four goals at home you should probably win the game, but when you go 4-2 down if someone offers you a point I think you're going to take it," Longstaff told Sky Sports.

"It's probably been the story of our season. A little bit up and down, a little bit inconsistent but another point on the board and move on."

Luton manager Rob Edwards said that he experienced a range of emotions during the contest.

"I just said to the lads I went from feeling sick to elation to...I experienced a lot during that 100-odd minutes," Edwards said. "I'm obviously really proud of the players, we've just got to strap in for 16 more of those.
